NEW YORK FASHION WEEK : Diane Von Furstenberg A/W11

WHAT : New York Fashion Week. A/W 2011
WHO : Diane Von Furstenberg
WHERE : erm, New York, I just told you that!
I am never entirely sure what my feelings on DVF are. On one hand her love of prints means that it's a collection I never entirely mesh with. Me being anti prints. But then, I do love some of her other pieces which are excellently made and quite pretty. So I am never sure what I'll make of her collections. Given that the first piece I saw had a print of shamrocks on it (oh I am not joking, I couldn't even put it near the blog) I was sure I would HATE this collection. But I actually, same as before - have no opinion on it.
The color scheme was simple. Reds, black, blue, minty greens and pinks. So jewel colors really. The prints tended to be simple in black and white with most of the jewel tones in block color.
There seems to be a relaxing of shape across fashion week at the moment! With Victoria Beckham also relaxing her structured style to create a slouchy shape. I am really into the boots meeting the skirt with the loose jumper over it. I really like that. Although the temptation to belt it might be a little bit much! There are also two other designers showing 70's style high neck jumpers. Which I can't say I am getting too excited about.
Is it just me or is the above picture extremely 90's? It's in the hair and the lips with the coat meeting the boots!!! Very very '94. It looks like the statement colored coat is back. Wear large and bright to make a full impact. It's your choice if you want to color block from head to toe. But I would prefer to wear it sharp over black. To make the color really stand out! Boots seem to be back up to the knee as well in suede bright colors.
Electric blue would normally be a shade I would associate with summer, but it's appearing on a fair few catwalks for winter. Proving that it's a very easy to wear shade that can carry you from this coming season to the next effortlessly. In fact wear for Summer as Mulberry then wear for Winter as DVF! Sorted!
The hat. All I can think of Hermes 2001 A/W and Chanel 2009 Summer. It keeps appearing time after time. It's not the most easily worn piece though.
Two trends here :
1 - The side split. This has appeared in a few collections already. It's extremely sexy done right, done wrong - you look like a slut. But hey! It tends to look fantastic on the long skirt. I think it appears a little bit dated above. Nothing in fashion becomes hot again until it has been off the catwalks for twenty years. The above skirt is very early 00's. Meaning I am just not read to entertain it yet! However the fact that it is high waisted does help.
2 - Sheer. Again same rules as above regarding the right and wrong way to wear it. A sheer blouse can be a fantastic weapon in the right hands though. I would team with skinny jeans and not a pencil skirt with a slit. Teamed with the jeans it allows the blouse to do the talking for me!!! Although not sure Dublin is ready for my nipples blazing around like that! Might just have to add a nice bra or cami! (chicken!)
This style also comes in shamrock print. Green shamrocks. I am not joking. Anyway, the jumpsuit is also back. Along with the furry gilet. I am loving the furry piece. I like the idea of it in white over a rock T-shirt and a pair of skinny jeans. I am having a fat day today and am tortured by the idea of my skinny jeans. Hence why I am bringing them up so much.
My pick of the collection. I don't know why I like the distressed dress but I do. Possibly because it is just so un-DVF. I would never normally associate something like this with that.

TRENDS TO WATCH :
Erm, shamrock prints on clothing....shudder
distressed ripped dresses
jumpsuits
midnight blue
90's styling
high waisted skirts
the side split
sheer pieces/panels
the statement coat
the statement red/orange lip
jewel tones
block colors
slouchy tailoring
large handbags big enough to fit the kitchen sink
knee high boots
poloneck jumpers.

MARKS OUT OF TEN : 5. There just wasn't enough that I liked here. It seemed the gap between what I liked and what just didn't work was huge. I preferred her SS11 collection. This seemed a little all over the place.
