Well here we are... the last batch of music videos which represent my favorite releases of the past year. We have seen spectacular, attention-grabbing visuals from artists all over the music spectrum (but still mainly in the pop genre) including Shakira, Sam Smith, Demi Lovato, Tokio Hotel and Sia, so who made the top five? Well, three of the artists have already been featured, one made a welcomed, acclaimed comeback and another released two album in less than a year. Have them figured out? Enjoy!
#5. "I Luh Ya Papi" by Jennifer Lopez
The fantasies the music video for "I Luh Ya Papi" by the flawless Jennifer Lopez gave me after its official release in March is enough to warrant a high spot on this list. For the first single off her tenth studio album, the artist came out big, with no limits, no restrictions, and I'm sure, no regrets. As her creative team tries to come up with a video concept, Lopez imagines a scenario of exploiting the sculpted bodies of men for no apparent reason. Men naked on her bed, men on her yacht, men washing her car, men everywhere. The finished product was sexy, filled with class and attitude, and surprisingly funny.
#4. "I Adore U" by Adore Delano
Adore Delano has released SIX music videos in 2014... so far. While "Party" and "Hello, I Love You" were cute accompanying visuals, it was her second effort for "I Adore U" that had critics viewing Delano as a true pop force, instead of just the typical drag performer who released an album. Besides the fact that the entertainment looks drop dead gorgeous in red hair, the tragic facial expressions we see from her when she walks in on her cheating boyfriend are nothing short of heartbreaking. Playing the video in reverse was a smart, interesting choice, as was seeing Adore as her male persona.
#3. "All About You" by Hilary Duff
This video came after seven years of waiting so of course "All About You" by pop princess Hilary Duff was going to make the cut. The visual for "Chasing The Sun" was adorable and a Lizzie McGuire throwback, but Duff's second video of 2014 was worth all the buzz she was building around her upcoming studio album. With a sort of cheesy "Cinderella chases down her prince" storyline, viewers and long time fans got to see the artist participate in a sensual yet classy dance routine, stalk her potential suitor and look absolutely stunning in practically every frame. The worst thing about the visual? It's only 2:44 long!
#2. "Break Free" by Ariana Grande feat. Zedd
In her Barbarella/Star Wars-inspired visual for "Break Free", pop sensation Ariana Grande showed everyone she can have fun in her successful career. Opening with a hilarious, ludicrous narrated introduction, the campy visual showed Grande courageously playing the role of an alien ass-kicking space warrior on an industrialized intergalactic planet. As she breaks her back-up dancers out of jail cells with her laser beam gun, Grande is also shown in scenes highlighting her true beauty, some of the best moments in the video. The young artist worked to shed her innocent past, and it worked very well for her this year.
#1. "G.U.Y" by Lady Gaga
#1. "G.U.Y" by Lady Gaga
No music video came even close to the epicness that is Lady Gaga's mini film for "G.U.Y"... and for "ARTPOP", "Venus" and "MANiCURE"... too much greatness for just one song. In the 12-minute spectacle, Gaga outdoes herself with a Hearst Castle location, the inclusion of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, her golden goddess bikini and the resurrection of Michael Jackson, Ghandi and Jesus. Seeming to be a slight attack at the executives of her own record label, as well as those she felt taken advantage by, the pop artist was on the hunt to create the perfect guy while beautifully sporting long blonde hair and a pair of jeans! Werk bitch!
